Even if you're not well-versed in Portuguesefadomusic, it's easy to be swayed by its rich, mournful sense of emotion. Mariza, one of the genre's premiere contemporary vocalists, seefadoas an international language. She makes a convincing case onConcerto em Lisboa, a live recording captured duirng her acclaimed performance at the Tower of Belem. It's an alternately elegant and electric showcase, highlighted by Mariza's gorgeous, piercing voice. She's backed by a full orchestra, whose timing and tightness only add to the experience. From the opening strains of "Loucura" through the closing "Ó Gente Da Minha Terra," Mariza is alternately somber and festive, creating a perfect synergy of singer and musicians. The disc's shattering standout track, "Menino Do Bairro Negro," is likely as gorgeous as anything you've heard in any language.--Joey Guerra
Mariza-Concerto em Lisboa I for the first time, saw this artist on the Dave Letterman Show..It was my introduction to "Fado " music..The BBC documentary DVD that comes with this CD is incredible...full of facts, full of music and a beautiful travelog on Portugal..Mariza is a voice from the gods..she is a real student of Fado and will captivate a memory for a lifetime.....you need this in your library....Allen Concerto em Lisboa w/Bonus DVD
Ms. Evie My daughter caught Mariza on the Letterman Show. I have purchased this package. I do not speak the language, had never heard of "Fado" but let me tell you, after having viewed the DVD, and listened to Mariza, I am totally in love with the music and Mariza's voice. Such expression, such passion. How wonderful it is to learn about a new kind of music. It truly is the Universal language! One may not know the language, but you can certainly feel the passion, whether it be joy or sadness. Oh! I just love this CD. I hope Mariza tours the US, especially VA Beach, VA!Fabulous music, live recording sucks Mariza has a great voice and her music is just fabulous. This recording is mediocre at best with people shouting from the audience and clapping with the music. It feels as if you are in some yankee-doodle get together. In some instances, they have dancers on stage and you can hear their feet and people cheering for them. It feels as if you are listening to the Nashville Grand Ole Opry Dancers on Radio. Pretty awful. I guess you'd have to be at the concert in order to enjoy this CD. Otherwise skip it. To have audience participation rob you of the purity of Fado is something that I don't appreciate.
I bought this CD after I saw Mariza on David Letterman and she was simply fabulous. Fado is to be enjoyed for its purity of sound, beauty and sadness. Also shame on Mariza's publicists for promoting this CD on Letterman when they should be promoting a non-live (and non-hick) version.
