Action anti-hero Jason Statham is competing with himself to make the most relentless, non-stop action flick imaginable. InCrank, Statham stars as a hit man named Chev Chelios who's been poisoned by some Chinese toxin; the only way to stave it off is to keep his adrenalin flowing, which requires him to drive at top speeds through crowded traffic, start fights in bars, and run pell-mell down hospital corridors while wearing one of those humiliating smocks that tie in the back. In other words,Crankis high-end pop-trash, filled with many preposterous/ingenious stunts and over-the-top performances (Dwight Yoakam,Sling Blade, is downright droll as a doctor offering Chev assistance), marred by an unpleasant attitude towards women (Amy Smart,Outside Providence, will not look back on this as one of her signature roles). This is a movie for the audience who enjoyedTransporterandTransporter 2but wanted Statham's perpetual scowl to become a kind of theatrical mask, a perpetual signifier of intensity that begs--nay, demands--that everything around it rise to a mutual level of absurdity. Fans of Luc Besson (Leon/The Professional,District 13) will findCrankto be simpatico.--Bret Fetzer
One Helluva Wild Ride - Buckle Up! Say this for "Crank," it definitely isn't boring. And it is certainly original and audacious. It is also ridiculous and will not hold up under any scrutiny. I, however, dismiss all logical criticisms of this movie, and any like it, with a wave of the hand. This movie exists solely to pop, rock and shock the audience. It is fake, over the top, ridiculous and outrageous. And that is precisely why it is one of the freshest, funniest and best pure action flicks in a long while. Sure there are more studied and complex action thrillers out there, but this is the most fun, junk-action pic this side of "Road House" and its cult action ilk. Not just a dumb campfest though, mind you; oh it's certainly none too brainy, but it has aspirations to shock and thrill beyond just having a bunch of guys shoot at each other or crash cars into things. There is a lot of that here, but the scenarios that spawn such things have to be seen to be believed. Ditto this movie. Everything here is taken to another level. Logical restrictions be damned. And the movie, and audience, is better for it.
There is, of course, already a movie called "Speed," and a terrific one at that; but had the title not been taken, this film would personify truth in advertising had it been able to use it. In a plot similar to the Keaue Reeves VS the bus classic, hitman and all around bad-a*s (we know this because he grimaces and talks in one of those threatening whispers ala Clint Eastwood and Steven Seagal) Jason Statham is injected with a virus known as "The Beijing Cocktail" that will explode his heart if its rate drops too low. You can only imagine all the different things he uses to keep his heart rate consistently above average: from waffle irons to nasal inhalers, deliberators to public sex, surfing atop motorcycles to jumping out of windows, the movie takes the `everything but the kitchen sink approach' and exploits the full potential of this outlandish premise, right up to its climax, which manages to feel truly bizarre, even for a movie in which you thought you've seen everything that could possibly come off as bizarre already. Yep, it just keeps on pushing those genre conventions.
Statham is good in a role that basically requires him to play the transporter again, although he loses his cool far more often in this film and spews far more expletives. However, if one were to imagine the Transporter's reaction to being injected with this type of poison, this is pretty much how we would expect his reaction, and the film, to play out. Amy Smart is good too in a minimalist role. Strong, stylish direction helps. If you're movie is essentially a cartoon already, cartoonish staging of the action is pretty much a key to making it work. The film is in on its own joke, which is a good thing. Rather than sell any of this as plausible, everyone involved simply goes with it.
As much as I dug this film, it admittedly won't be everyone's cup of tea. However, if you are someone who complains that action movies have become too generic, here's a big present for you.
"Crank" is often laugh-out-loud funny, jaw-on-the-floor audacious, and also manages to wring suspense out of its many close calls, and it never forgets to throw in a surprise here and there to keep things spicy.
Sounds like a five-star action pic to me.
"My name is Chev Chelios, and today's the day I die." Hit-man Chev Chelios (Jason Statham) is about to have a very bad day. He wakes up groggy, and plays a tape that indicates that he's been injected with a Beijing cocktail. It is revealed that he screwed up a hit after having a crisis of conscience, and failed to kill one of his targets (Keone Young). Now there's a thug named Ricky Verona (Jose Pablo Cantillo) that screwed him up, unaware that Chelios is still alive. All the former hit-man must do is keep his adrenaline up any way possible, and keep his girlfriend Eve (Amy Smart) out of danger.
If 2006 is teaching us anything, it's that tributes to classic exploitation action thrillers are coming back in a big way. First came August's "Snakes on a Plane," a box office dud that is receiving the strongest praise from reviewers everywhere. Now it has competition: the latest Jason Statham starrer "Crank." While not at the absurdly hilarious levels of the snake movie, it has the British actor in a role that should get him the same amount of attention that "Transporter 2" gave him (this movie here was announced weeks after "T2" arrived in theaters last year at this time). And it's a wild ride.
"Crank" is directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor who, ironically, are music video directors. Don't let this be a red flag, as this movie is as fast and furious as any intentionally trashy action thriller can get. As well as shooting with HD cameras, the directors add some visual panache that remind viewers of some of Tony Scott's recent work ("Domino," "Enemy of the State," and "Man on Fire"), yet it doesn't wear out its welcome. Instead, it gives sense of the viewers that they are almost in the movie. Save for the subtitles, which can be overlooked.
We won't reveal too many spoilers of how the premise of "Crank" works, but some of it is really good. Some of them are actually humorous. In case you haven't seen the trailer, one of them is where he forces Eve to have sex with him - in front of supporting citizens in Chinatown - to keep his adrenaline up. He even has to listen to music (including a rendition of "Achy Breaky Hart") to accomplish this as well. While the directors don't explore too many possibilities (they seem to have Statham screaming at citizens too often, which doesn't accomplish anything), they have the balls to make them over-the-top enough to entertain audiences.
What's even bizarre is the music choices, but that's how the movie is funny. You'll hear a remastered mix of a classic Marvin Gaye song I won't mention before Chev and Eve get it on, and it's insane. Even more insane is the other songs - Loverboy's "Turn Me Loose" is played during a fight between Chev and Ricky Verona's brother.
"Crank," like "SOAP," revels in twisting its clichıs and making the movie that much fun. Jason Statham ditches the martial arts moves and the brooding voice, and is completely unhinged. Him and Jose Pablo Cantillo performed their own stunts, so give them credit for throwing caution in the wind. And Amy Smart fits the bill as the spunky girlfriend sidekick (she joins Rachel Blanchard from "SOAP" as another "Road Trip" actress in a great exploitation actioner). Everyone does an awesome job.
Action movies do not get much better than this. While it won't raise the viewer's tension like "Snakes on a Plane," and the ending seemed to take itself a tad too seriously, "Crank" is the action thriller that "Running Scared" was vying to be, but failed. And it's directed by music video directors. Definitely throw inhibitions to the wind before watching this movie, because it's as absurd as it comes, and damn if I wasn't entertained.hell yeah this movie is the second best film ive seen this year{clerks 2 is #1} if you liked the transporter movies this is for you cuz its even better then those crank is non stop action and has some of the most innavative stunts you'll see this year
