Take the firstPirates of the Caribbeanfilm, add a dash of20,000 Leagues Under the Seaand a lot more rum. Shake well and you'll have something resemblingDead Man's Chest, a bombastic sequel that's enjoyable as long as you don't think too hard about it. The film opens with the interrupted wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), both of whom are arrested for aiding in the escape of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in the first film. Their freedom can only be obtained by getting Captain Jack's compass, which is linked to a key that's linked to a chest belonging to Davy Jones, an undead pirate with a tentacle face and in possession of a lot of people's souls. If you're already confused, don't worry--plot is definitely not the strong suit of the franchise, as the film excels during its stunt pieces, which are impressively extravagant (in particular a three-way swordfight atop a mill wheel). It may help to know thatDead Man's Chestwas filmed simultaneously with some ofPirates 3, so don't expect a complete resolution (think moreThe Empire Strikes Back) or the movie will feel alotlonger than it really is.
Bloom shows a tad bit more brawn this time around, but he's still every bit as pretty as the tomboyish Knightley. (Seriously, sometimes you think they could swap roles.) Bill Nighy (Love, Actually) weighs in as Davy Jones and Stellan Skarsgård appears as Will's undead father. But the film still belongs wholly to Depp, who in a reprise of his Oscar-nominated role gets all the belly laughs with a single widened eyeliner-ed gaze. He still runs like a cartoon hen and slurs like Keith Richards--and he's still one of the most fascinating movie characters in recent history.--Ellen A. Kim
Definitely Disney! I liked the first movie better, I thought it was more natural in the acting, dialogue and fight choreography. This second episode is way too Disney, aimed at younger viewers and very artificial overall!
Gets you ready for the third movie This movie is full of action, nd wonderful special effects. Sure this movie leaves alot ,and I mean alot of unanswered questions, but who cares ther probably going to answer them in the sequel next May (well at least I yhink its May). Of cours they have Johnny Depp back in his role as Capt. Jack Sparrow (He is so great in that role. and they've brought back all the old characters you loved from the first movie. Although I don't think Davy Jones was the best villian I have ever seen. The story is not as good as The Curse of the Black Pearl, but this movie still offers lots of thrills, and all the questions should be answered in the next film. I highly suggest buying this movie and the first movie, because some day I swear all of these movies will be cosidered classics. Not For Those Who Want Another Curse of the Black Pearl. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is a very engaging film, but if you are expecting something that is like the original then you will be a little disappointed. It maintains a similar spirit of the original, but it creates a very different style of movie the second time through. Dead Man's Chest brings back many of the favorite old characters. Johnny Depp of course comes back as the infamous Jack Sparrow continuously playing the character strictly for humor with his swaying swagger and slack, waving arms, and hilarious facial expressions. Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly come back as the couple Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann. Jack Davenport comes back as Norrington, except exiled and stripped of his status as an Officer in the Royal Navy. Jonathan Pryce returns as well, to play Governor Weatherby Swann or simply Elizabeth's Father. Other reprised roles include Kevin McNally as Mr. Gibbs, Lee Arenberg and Mackenzie Crook as the pirates Pintel (angry bald pirate) and Regetti (the pirate with the wooden eye), and many others.
The new characters we meet add a lot to the story such as Bootstrap Bill played by Stellan SkarsgÄrd. Will Turner's Father who is a barnacle/crustacean riddled servant of Davy Jones, the captain of the Flying Dutchman, played by Bill Nighy. While the fight scenes are not as engaging as the sword fighting from Curse of the Black Pearl they are still exciting nonetheless. Another thing Dead Man's Chest brings to the silver screen is more interesting visual effects such as the way Davy Jones and his crew look crustacean-like and barnacle encrusted, all of whom (for the most part) are completely constructed from computer animation. One will find undead sea-creature pirates a little more eye catching than undead skeleton pirates. The new characters give the audience a small feeling of the original while, at the same time, adding a completely new and original chapter to the story.
I will also say that if one were to not see the opening Disney logo, it would be very difficult to know that this was a Disney movie. Unlike the stories of the cartoons that we all know and love, Pirates of the Caribbean is far more violent. Even more so than Curse of the Black Pearl. There is more death, more gore, and more violence altogether. Not to mention that there are also a lot more scary situations as well. This movie is definitely more intense than the first in terms of its increased level of brutality. So, if you're not into that then stay away from this movie because it has a lot of it.
Finally, I will say this without giving away any spoilers: If one is expecting a conclusive ending, then prepare to be disappointed. Just like in The Matrix Reloaded, this movie is just setting everything up for the third installment for next year.
