Cult comic actor Steve Carell--long adored for his supporting work onThe Daily Showand in movies likeBruce AlmightyandAnchorman--leaps into leading man status withThe 40 Year-Old Virgin. There's no point describing the plot; it's about how a 40 year-old virgin named Andy (Carell) finally finds true love and gets laid. Along the way, there are very funny scenes involving being coached by his friends, speed dating, being propositioned by his female manager, and getting his chest waxed. Carell finds both humor and humanity in Andy, and the supporting cast includes some standout comic work from Paul Rudd (Clueless,The Shape of Things) and Jane Lynch (Best in Show,A Mighty Wind), as well as an unusually straight performance from Catherine Keener (Lovely&Amazing,Being John Malkovich). And yet... something about the movie misses the mark. It skirts around the topic of male sexual anxiety, mining it for easy jokes, but never really digs into anything that would make the men in the audience actually squirm--and it's a lot less funny as a result. Nonetheless, there are many great bits, and Carell deserves the chance to shine.--Bret Fetzer
Sad humor I gave it one star for the song he sang at the end of the movie. That was funny. I rented this movie after all the hype from the reviews on TV. I took it back (the long version) to the store because it was disgusting. I was told the long version was "over the top". Well the regular version was just as bad. Why we have to laugh at this kind of humor is just beyond me. I guess there are alot of people out there (just like the men in this movie) who are so bored with their lives that they have to laugh at this type of humor. It could have been a clever movie if they had cut the porn and sick humor. It was nothing more than a glorified porn movie. Call it what it is.
Raunchy and Awesome From Smother Magazine smother.net -
For those people who have missed the Adam Sandler era of "Billy Madison" and "Happy Gilmore", I present to you, "The 40-Year Old Virgin". Starring Steve Carell ("The Daily Show") and Paul Rudd ("Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy", "The Cider House Rules", "Friends"), this comedy is over the top hilarious and crude to its very core. And that's what makes it totally enjoyable and awesome. The special features also are well worth watching especially the "I know you're gay" part. Steve Carell does a fantastic job in surely what will live on as one of funnier comedies out there. In this day and age where the so-called "moral majority" and conservative Christian groups are riff with removing adult content from all forms of media it's refreshing to be able to see a great vulgar and profane movie that provides some adult entertainment that isn't centered around a Mel Gibson movie-because apparently ultra-violence is acceptable as long as it meets the Christian right-wing's ideals. If this is the direction of comedy movies that director Judd Apatow ("Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy", "Kicking and Screaming") will be making in the future, then consider me an avid fan! This is not a movie just to rent-you must own this. Not smart, not so funny at all This is a regular comedy that develops the plot using a one and only gag. While I saw only the extended version on DVD, I don't think that a plot like this could've been developed in a more interested way taking aside the extra 17 minutes. After all, I have seen all the original material released in the theatrical version, only that on the extended one you can experience rythym problems and other stuff, but still the main plot is just as common as it was that of "American Pie", "40 Days and 40 Nights", etc.
The writer just put into the mix some stand alone scenes with funny moments -some of them, not all- and the filmmakers put them together in order to make a coherent plot, but this is not something you haven't seen before. While comedy is a subjective thing, on a general level this is not an outstanding job, it's just a regular comedy with some funny moments that will keep you entertained for a couple of hours. That's it. Not more not less.
If you're a fan of this type of work I encourage you to see it becasuse you will have a great time. For the ones that want more sophisticated comedies this is the wrong place to look for.
