When prissy, prickly Sylvia Stickles (Tracey Ullman) suffers a head injury during a traffic altercation, she's, er, revived by self-appointed sexual missionary Ray-Ray Perkins (Johnny Knoxville) and is transformed into an insatiable, take-no-prisoners sex maniac. Yes, it's a John Waters film. Yes, it's filthy. No, it's not as hilarious and sustained as you'd like it to be. It works for a while, though: Ullman, never a stingy comedienne, does everything Waters dares her to do without hesitation; words cannot describe the perversely sporting delight with which she mounts a water bottle during a round of "The Hokey Pokey" at an old folks' home. And there's some fun to be had when Sylvia's emancipation leads her Baltimore 'burb to new heights of ecstasy, freeing her large-breasted daughter Caprice (Selma Blair) while horrifying husband Vaughn (Chris Isaak) and her hardline mother Big Ethel (Suzanne Shepherd, hysterical) in the process. It's also packed with the standard cameos, the most satisfying of which is good old Patty Hearst at a Sex Addicts Anonymous encounter. But, for all the nasty, necessary glee, the movie feels inescapably been-there-done-that, and you can't help but wish this was 1972 and Divine was on hand to prowl for dog droppings. The most shocking thing aboutA Dirty Shameis how desperate and tiresome its anarchy becomes.--Steve Wiecking
WHAT THE... THIS MOVIE IS NOT VULGAR NOR DOES IT RATE NC17...DONT BELIEVE THE HYPE. CHECK OUT PINK FLAMINGOS INSTEAD, NOW THAT IS A VULGARLY RIGHTEOUS MOVIE BY WATERS AND THE WITH THE GODDESS OF FILTH..DEVINE.Excellent Sex Comedy There are some John Water's movies that are hardly watchable because of the poor script, filming and acting like Pink Flamingos and Mondo Trasho. John Water's work started to improve with the make of Hairspray. Then Crybaby, serial mom, and cecil b demented proved that Water's can make some excellent comedies. A Dirty Shame combines the raunch of Desperate Living and Female Trouble with the high tech filming and direction of Cry Baby and Serial Mom. This movie is lighter and easier to watch than any of his dark or disgusting comedies. If this movie wasn't making me laugh which it did several times then it was entertaining me which is what I expect when I see a movie. The characters in this movie are hilarious and so are all the situations. There is frontal nudity, foul and perverse language and of course tons of off the wall innuendo and humor. I'd suggest you watch or buy this movie if you like sex comedies or comedies in general.John Waters gets back to his roots!! Dirty Shame is totally sleazy, raunchy, and without any redeeming social value whatsoever. It's great! It is a movie in the early John Waters manner, but with modern production values. If you're a prude, stay away. But, do you know what 'Tromboning' is? What if your girlfriend asks you to 'Sneeze in the Cabbage?' Get hip to all this and more in the movie! Get the NC-17 version, I haven't seen the R version but I hear it sucks (pun intended).
