Just asA Bug's Lifewas a computer-animated comedy inspired by Akira Kurosawa'sThe Seven Samurai, the funny and often enthrallingIce Ageis a digital re-imagining of the WesternThree Godfathers. The heroes of this unofficial remake (set 20,000 years ago, during the titular Paleolithic era) are a taciturn mastodon named Manfred (voiced by Ray Romano), an annoying sloth named Sid (John Leguizamo), and a duplicitous saber-toothed tiger, Diego (Denis Leary). The unlikely team encounters a dying, human mother who relinquishes her chirpy toddler to the care of these critters. Hoping, against all odds, to return the little guy to his migrating tribe, Manfred and his associates need to establish trust among themselves, not an easy thing in a harsh world of predators, prey, and pushy glaciers. Audiences that have become accustomed to the rounded, polished, storybook look of Pixar's house brand of computer animation (Monsters, Inc.) will find the blunt edges and chilly brilliance ofIce Age--evoking the harsh, dangerous environment of a frozen world--a wholly different, and equally pleasing, trip. Recommended for ages 4 and up.--Tom Keogh
Great Movie Bought this for my son when he was two. He loved all of the animals in it and he watched it over and over again because he thought the BABY was great. This movie has since become known as the "Baby Movie" in our house. We all enjoy it. Great for entire family.
Excellent Movie Ice Age is fun and enjoyable for adults as well as children. We liked it so well that we had to get Ice Age II as soon as it came out. Parts are funny and some is very serious. Shows taking care of someone even though you are so different from one another. Just a great fun movie.Cool Laughs 'Ice Age' deserves to be called the classic it is. With a quirky, mismatched group of sojourners, including Manfred the Mammoth (Ray Romano), Sid the silly Sloth (John Leguizamo), and Diego, the savvy, saber-toothed tiger (Denis Leary), the elements are all in place for some funny, pre-historic fun. When Diego's pack of tigers discover the cavemen have a baby child, they plot to avenge the predator humans by constructing a kidnapping plot. It first goes awry, but the baby is sent down the river, where he is saved by the goofy Sid, who brings the reluctant Manfred into the fold of his plan to return the little bugger. Diego has to earn his credibility with his pack by retrieving the child, but he ends up in the entourage of our Cenozoic Era misfits. Will he betray his pack or his new found friends?
'Ice Age' has good, character laughs and some fun adventure with a polar slide that is hard to beat. The sight gags work well, too. Clocking in before an hour and a half doesn't hurt, either, as Hollywood learns that they don't have to always give us extraneous director's cuts that are tiresome at best. Even the gratuitous ancestor of the squirrel is hysterical for his "nutty" adventures that only have a slight connection to the plot.
