A Challenging But Fun Game I have played the original Paper Mario for Nintendo 64, and I now own Paper Mario:The Thousand Year Door. The verdict? The original was slightly more addicting but the new one's graphics are flawless, adding more enjoyabilty. Though this Paper Mario may seem like nothing from description, I assure you it is actually quite fun.
Story: 4/5 The story is a bit typical.Princess Peach is kidnapped(yes, again.) and now the only one who can save her is Mario. And this time he's....a piece of paper? Odd sounding, I know, but that plays into the special effects of this game.Anyways, to rescue his beloved, Mario must collect the 7 crystal stars, using the thousand-year door to show him locations on his map. Though the story may seem all too typical, it does have a plot that is countinual and can come up with many different characters and events to keep you entertained for quite awhile. You'll make friends who will send you e-mails throughout the game. There are also many evil villians and different schemes going on. It all adds up to a seeminly boring plot equaling an actually very interesting one. Also, you will always have a sidekick. They help you out in battle, sometimes make comments, and can get you out of a sticky situation. You get ..I think 7 sidekicks throughout different periods of the game, including the only optional one.
Graphics: 5/5 From overly-detailed backgrounds to decorative costumes, this game has amazing graphics. Everything is in rich color and there is never a dull scene. Though, things may be portrayed in 2-D it doesn't take away from the "Woah." factor of how nice everything looks. I barely even notice anymore. Everything about the graphics are so detailed and textured it can even be distracting, esspecially turning battle scenes.
Audio: 4/5 I admit, the soundtrack in the background may not always be stunning or even beautiful, but it does a nice job of adding to the desired mood or effect. In the Glitzpitz (a wrestling arena) you can hear the cry of anxious fans and when Mario is taken by suprised he isn't afraid to give a shout. There is always different music for every different city or place you go to, making it enjoyable at first though some of their music will probably annoy you after spending some time in one place. They have different battle music for regular enemies and bosess which is a nice touch.
Replay?: 2/5 Most roleplaying games like this aren't very fun to play all over again after it has taken you so long to finally reach your goal. It doesn't feel very worthwhile and the mass dialect will start to annoy you.
Fun: 4/5 The most boring part of this entire game would have to be the very beginning because of its large amount of dialect. I remember how relieved I was when I finally got to control Mario. Besides that, this game is very fun. Some people may say this is too much dialouge but I think it's necessary. Anyway, almost all of it is in between chapters and it takes awhile to get through a chapter (and is always very action filled) so it can be even a little refreshing. I admit, this game can get annoying if you just don't know where to find something or how to do a certain part. I have used an online help for these parts only, which I find works nicely if I'm really stuck. As I said before, being paper comes into the special effects. That is because, if a certain landmark or spot is there, Mario can turn into a form of a paper object. For example: when there is a arrowed platform, walk Mario onto it, press Y, and you'll turn into a paper airplane. That is of course, only available to you after you get cursed.
Overall: 4.5/5 This game is very fun and challenging. It does have a lot of dialouge, but almost all of it is at the beginnnig and inbetween chapters, so you can play the rest of the time. A few times I have been stuck between it being too easy and too hard but it's just about right. This game may seem so simple, but with so many little details and ideas it helps make it more difficult but still manages to keep it enjoyable. With such rich graphics, interesting audio, and long, intricate plot, this game is very wothwhile. Better than original! This game is over 100% better than number one, even though I miss those little shy guys reeking havoc all over the town... I love the graphics and the new moves from the "cursed" chests. I am on the moon on one of my files, and on my other one i am at Twilight Town. I just liked the game so much! Most of the partners are remakes of the original allies, like Goombro got turned into Goombla. I haven't played the original in such a long time, so I don't remember the other allies names. But, the koopa in the first is replaced by Koops. The female bom-omb is replaced by Bomberto. The Boo is replaced by Flurrie/ Vivian. You get the idea. The following is a few tips to beat each boss. IF YOU DON'T NOT WANT TIPS, DON'T READ THE FOLLOWING!
Hooktail (Peatalburg/Hooktail castle) Long story short, he hates crickets. There is supposed to be one in the castle, but I have yet to find it. Also, once the chicken is defeated the first time (he starts with 20 HP), he will try to trick you into something. Keep saying NO! Most importantly when he offers to let you smell his feet. (Yes, he is a sick monster.) He will then EAT some of the audience. He will now have 10 HP. Just hammer him and the crystal star is yours!
Von Grapple (Boggly woods/ Great Tree) pretty simple, really. Just keep on attacking. I recommend not using goombela, for he has a defense of 1, making her attacks useless. When he sends out his hands, attack them first. They have an HP of 2. One of the easier boss battles.
Rawk Hawk/ Grubba (Glitzville/Glitz Pit) Rawk is the champion fighter, but one tip before you fight him. You will receive 2 cakes during your stay in the major leagues, the first one normal, the second one poison. Guess who? Rawk Hawk sent you the second cake. He fights dirty, well for now anyway. I recommend before starting this battle to equip the shrink stomp badge to lower his attack power. He has a high HP, but it fairly simple compared to what comes up next. Mr. Grubba. He might seem weak by the way he looks normally, but before the battle starts, he turns into Macho Grubba. He can power himself up, attack and defense wise. He can also increase the amount of times he attacks per turn. Once again, break out the shrink stomp. This is a pretty long battle, but if you keep using those items and special moves (especially Earth Tremor) you should win.
??? (Twilight Town/ Creepy Steeple) This jerk will fight you twice, once as a person that looks like he has a blanket over his head, the other time when he is Mario and you have no identity. First fight, fairly easy. Second round, not so good. The bad news: all your partners think that he's you and your some lowlife fighting for no reason at all. The good news: Vivian (yes, the shadow siren) is a new partner. If you win this battle, you will be Mario again. (Yay!)
Note: the following battles might not be in correct order.
Cortez/ X-nauts (Keyhaul Key/ Pirates' Grotto) Cortez might be harder, but don't FORGET TO SAVE! I did, and boy, I beat the X-nauts by the skin of my teeth. So, Cortez. Evil pirate ghost. Scary. Well, he really is, because once you think he's gone, he isn't. He has 3 forms! Yes three. One form (I believe it's the last) he's a floating head. Might sound easy, right? Wrong! He has 4 different types of swords with him, floating, that you can't attack normally. Anyone for Earth Tremor? Anyway, you could probably defeat him after a few tries. So after you get out of Pirates' Grotto, here come the X-nauts, on a ship. Just like in the Great Tree, just attack as much as you can. Items are very effective.
None! (Poshly Heights/ Poshly Express) Well, if you want where the crystal star is, it's in a room full of Boos. Easily avowing them, walk north and congratulations! End of chapter. I guess if you want to name a boss, you can say it's that thing that you fight while on the train. I mean, it's the only way to get to Poshly Heights. I guess, attack the arms, then attack the main body. It's the only way to do damage.
Grodious (Moon/ Moon Base) No data available. (Haven't fought him yet)
superyoshi1234567 I loved this game from the moment I bought it to this very day. Its storyline intrigued me and it was difficult to leave the screen. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door was wonderfully done with extremely impressive graphics. I was suprised they could develop a game and just using paper-like characters and backgrounds. The game has a wonderful story line that is just as impressive as all the other Mario based games (and many other games for that matter). The characters and enemies increadably thought out with their different personnalities and skills. I absolutely loved the game, and since the story line is long and thought out, I continued to love the game even after a won. The dialogue is witty and describes the different characteristics of your partners (and enemies) wonderfully. I highly recommend this game to many players and I guarantee that this game will keep you glued to the screen whether you like it or not, even for those who are not fans of Mario.
