Tracks Fallen World on Fire Stupid Drifting Train Wreck Push Answer Time Perfect Girl Dirty Little Secret
Is Sarah McLachlan a secret punk rocker? To be sure, her rebellion is hushed. OnAfterglow, her first studio album since 1997'sSurfacing, McLachlans music is as tempered as ever; at times even the piano chords at the heart of the sound are tucked neatly beneath layer upon layer of strings and overdubbed voices. Listen to whats being sung within this soothing aural bed, though, and hear the just-before-sleep murmurings of the quietest riot grrl: "Im a train wreck waiting to happen.... a wildfire born of frustration," "How stupid could I be.... youre no good for me, but youre the only one I see," "I have to push just to see how far youll go." The latter song ("Push") resolves itself with the assurance, "You complete me." Ultimately, McLachlan fans will be comforted again by what turns out to be her reliably untroubled aesthetic.--Rickey Wright
It's not Surfacing Okay, I've loved Sarah since hearing 'Adia' a few years back. I LOVE Surfacing, and when 'Afterglow' was released I knew I had to own it. The only problem was I hadn't heard anything off the album except 'Train Wreck' and I was not a fan of the song. A friend of mine had the track 'Dirty Little Secret' on a CD and let me listen to it and I loved it so much that I went out and bought the CD that day. Now, the first half and the last half of this album are great, the middle is decent, and it's not that any track is bad really (I mean, I don't like 'Train Wreck' but it's not terrible) it's just that nothing on this album grabs me like Surfacing did. There's no 'Adia', no 'Building a Mystery'...no 'Angel'. 'Fallen' is a great opening track, beautifully written and beautifully sung, and 'Stupid' is also a favorite of mine. 'Push' and the closing 'Dirty Little Secret' are probably my favorite tracks here, the later is so haunting it's almost breathtaking. I love and always will love Sarah and her beautiful voice, I just wanted something earth shattering in 'Afterglow' and I didn't find it. It's still worth the buy and well worth the listen, it's just not as good as Surfacing.
Steady At [not Fumbling Towards] Mediocrity Too boring to ever really loathe, McLachlan has long remained on that cusp of mediocrity and frustration - hints of beauty surface here and there every few years, but the compendium is always the same - dull songs, listless vocals, uninspiring and lazy musical arrangement. Nothing here as breathtaking as `Ben's Song' or `Possession' or `Do What You Have To Do', but we have a host of replicates of the dreaded `Angel' and `Into The Fire' and `Solace' and any other countless fungible melodies from her pretty-enough canon. She might or might not be a hack, but if she is, she's a fancy hack. My grade: C+Absolutely astonishing! Even though this cd only has 10 songs, it is one heck of a cd! Sarah's voice is stunning. I enjoyed the song Fallen so much. Everything from her voice, lyrics, and instrumentals is breathtaking. This is a MUST have. It's one of her very best. Can she captivate her listener, or what?!
