While reinventing Leopold and Loeb for a new and troubled millennium,Murder by Numbers probes the disturbing psychology of two teenaged murderers and the cleverness of their crime. Like Hitchcock'sRope and other films inspired by the Leopold and Loeb case of the 1920s, the film intensifies as it explores the repressed (and subtly homosexual) tensions between high-school outcasts Richard (Ryan Gosling) and Justin (Michael Pitt), who randomly kill a woman to enact an amoral philosophy--and to tease a savvy homicide detective (Sandra Bullock) with misleading clues. While clashing with the by-the-book procedure of her partner (Ben Chaplin), Bullock gives one of her best performances in a role that comes with its own set of psychological hurdles. It's comfortable territory forReversal of Fortune director Barbet Schroeder, who draws fine work from his cast while proving that there's no such thing as a perfect crime.--Jeff Shannon
OPPS! MIND GAMES I don't particularly care for mind games but this had a sudtlety? that was easy to miss.
Richard, as a moneyed playboy, and Justin who was just too brilliant were bored with life as they knew it. Their dependence on each other to spice things up led me to wonder if the girlfriend was be a next victim.
Hard-nosed Cassie was still having problems with her own past which surely colored her treatment of her male partners. Even her seduction scene showed her twisted idea of how to handle a man.
Her new partner, San [or Sam], let himself get seduced only once and then showed some backbone the next time. But they showed professional respect for each other as they tracked down this random? murderer.
Justin and Richard were great in their acting - they were just short of repulsive, in looks and attitudes.
The backgrounds had plenty of color and I loved the opening scene in the high-cliff cottage.
Not too bad - just a little bit on the dark side, mentally.
saw an edited tv version and i still thought it was worth my time. Bullock is soo sexy. mind you, i have a terribly short attentioon span. but this movie kept me locked in place. ivee had a bruush witht being questtioned by the e law myself. maybee t hat had something to do with it.Fantastic movie but didn't like the romantic tie-in I love Sandra Bullock and I thought this movie was great. Even though we know who does it the whole time, I like how everything unfolds at the end. The only thing I didn't like was how they tied in Bullock's character's difficulties with men due to her own tragic experiences. In order to keep this aspect of the movie without making it a major turn-off, the film makers could have left out the love scene. It was not necessary.
