Tracks Watermark Cursum Perficio On Your Shore Storms In Africa Exile Miss Clare Remembers Orinoco Flow (Sail Away) Evening Falls River The Longships Na Laetha Geal M'oige Storms In Africa II
Enya's 1988 recordingWatermarkachieved landmark success with her groundbreaking use of multi-tracking technology to fuse new age and Celtic themes and instrumentation. The meticulous production defines her sound and achieves continuity even while weaving together tender ballads, piano pieces, massively layered vocal harmonies, and symphonic synthesizer movements. Although Enya's pristine voice isn't especially strong, her lead vocals possess a vulnerability that reflects the lyrics' sense of personal searching. From the ubiquitous, frothy single "Orinoco Flow" (which was used to hawk Crystal Light on TV) to the hard, bold edge of "Cursum Perficio," Enya's style remains fresh and engaging today.--Richard Price
Enya - watermark :) I once heard that women with child should listen to classical music to help soothe her and the child she is carrying, however when my own mum was pregnant with me it was enya that she listened to and I suppose I was brought up listening to enya in my childhood. I am now 15 years old and although through my life I have explored many different genres of music Enya has been a constant artist I have always related to and loved.
With the help of Enya and my parents wide range of varied music and musicians I am very open minded about my music despite being very much into my rock and metal presently. Her music has influenced myself and my own music playing and I can play several songs from 'the memory of trees' album and others on the piano and has helped me accomplish a grade 6 style of playing although I am presently taking my grade 4 at this moment in time. I have also performed several at a few concerts and on one occassion for my GCSE music recital.
Between my parents and myself we have every album she has released. I've heard about a new album being released recently called 'cedar moon' im hoping to get this for my mums christmas present and then borrow it later :P. Watermark I feel was one of her most popular and rewarding albums and I still love listening to 'storms in africa'. 'A day without rain' was her more modern albums and although the quality was good I felt I could pick my favourites out more easily compared to her more older albums. She's one of the few that can produce an album in which every song is of excellent quality and fits together, one of the few opinions both my mum and myself agree whole heartedly on. Each of her albums covers my emotions in one, whether im feeling sad, happy, free or angry.
Shes been going strong for so long and I hope there will be more albums to come, now im off to either TESCOs or a local music shop in search for the new release.
Watermark is outstanding This only proves that in order to find one of the best albums, you have to look past her current seller, "Amarantine." Amarantine is a great album, but it can't beat this one.
TRACK BY TRACK
WATERMARK-This is one of Enya's best instrumentals. It's a good piece to listen to when you want to comcentrate.(9.5/10)
CURSUM PERFICIO-DAAAAAARRKK! Great piece, but not bedtime music.(8/10)
ON YOUR SHORE-Quiet and relaxing. In my review of AMARANTINE I mentioned that I don't love ballads. I forgot to mention this: her older ones are good. Still, not my favorite.(8/10)
STORMS IN AFRICA-Very nice! She sings in Gaelic on this one. I would like her vocals to be a bit louder though.(8.5/10)
EXILE-Vocals are GREAT! Roma's lyrics here are alright, too. This is one of my favorite slow ballads.(9/10)
MISS CLARE REMEMBERS-Short and unremarkable. Least favorite track on the CD.(5/10)
ORINOCO FLOW-Favorite track on CD and one of my favorite Enya songs! I usually listen to it when I travel. Upbeat, good layering-but what's the bit about Rob Dickins and Ross?(10/10)
EVENING FALLS-Not my favorite. Enya's vocals are great though!(7/10)
RIVER-Not my favorite either. Very repetitive, and Enya's vocals aren't there.(5/10)
THE LONGSHIPS-Good track, but somewhat repetitive.(8/10)
NA LAETHA GAEL M'OIGE-Gaelic again! This is another one of the few ballads that I like.(9/10)
This CD is great and embodies Enya's best works. One of my favorites to relax to. Watermark stands the test of time. Years later it still moves me to a better place when I listen to it.
