The final Genesis studio album to feature Phil Collins finds the increasingly pop-oriented singer/drummer more firmly in the driver's seat than onWe Can't Dance's predecessor,Invisible Touch. However,We Can't Dance has little of its predecessor's exuberance and freshness. Inspiration and ideas are spread too thinly over the 70-minute length of the album, resulting in flabby arrangements and lyrics. There are moments throughout when the carefully crafted choruses and smoothly integrated sound of later Genesis prove winning. "Hold on My Heart," for one, proves that Collins can still produce real emotion. Still, it's not surprising that this was this bunch's last recording together.--James Swift
There is only one reason this is in my CD collection Okay...
I have to say, the first time I ever heard of Genesis was "That's All" and "Illegal Alien".
Even when Phil Collins "No Jacket Required" became such a monster hit in the mid 80's along with "Invisible Touch", I wasn't a big fan, I just liked the music.
It was when I bought albums like "Genesis", "Duke" and even "Abacab" that I had realized that this band had an incredible sound.
So when "We Can't Dance" came out, I was excited due to the song "No Son of Mine", but was really let down by songs like "I can't Dance", that stupid song about evangilists. But the only reason I have this CD in my collection is the song "Driving The Last Spike".
This song is a very incredible song that moves me evertime I hear it.
It is a song that will be lost in an album full of nothing. It is too bad that it is on such horrible album that basicly sounds like a Phil Collins solo album being played by Mike and the Mechanics.
Grreat album! I like this one. It's adult contemporary and pop, but it's 'experimental' adult contemporary and pop. As ever 'Genesis' come up with new ideas. Throughout this album you can hear original melodies, unusual arrangements and original time signatures. The lyrics carry personal emotion. I own it on vinyl, and on vinyl it was a double album. My favourite track is 'Tell me why'. It has an orchestral feel and then it has a style and tempo change leading into a more 'rock' chorus. It has a very original melody. It is one of my favourite Genesis songs. I also like fadign lights, Since I lost you, dreaming while you sleep and never a time. Perhaps it's a bit too long for an album that isn't very diverse, but it began a swing away from straight pop, the material on invisible touch, towards a more prog direction. This is reflected in songs like 'Fading lights' a Phil Collins farewell [kind of], Dreaming while you sleep and driving the last spike. I don't think this album is as mainstream as Invisible Touch. Apparently 'Calling All Stations' continued that swing away from mainstream pop.this is just the best songs ever on here i just loved 'no sone of mine' and 'jesus he knows me' they were really great songs
