There is only one word that comes close to accurately describing the enchantingMary Poppins, and that term was coined by the movie itself: supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Even at 2 hours and 20 minutes, Disney's pioneering mixture of live action and animation (based on the books by P.L. Travers) still holds kids spellbound. Julie Andrews won an Oscar as the world's most magically idealized nanny ("practically perfect in every way," and complete with lighter-than-air umbrella), and Dick Van Dyke is her clownishly charming beau, Bert the chimney sweep. The songs are also terrific, ranging from bright and cheery ("A Spoonful of Sugar") to dark and cheery (the Oscar-winning "Chim-Chim Cheree") to touchingly melancholy ("Feed the Birds"). Many considerMary Poppinsto be the crowning achievement of Walt Disney's career--and it was the only one of his features to be nominated for a best picture Academy Award untilBeauty and the Beastin 1991.--Jim Emerson
Mary Poppins is Supercalifragilistic.... uh? well you know! Let me start by saying I LOVE THIS MOVIE. It is one of the few movies I can watch over and over. I remember as a child when I had the chicken pox over christmas break, and I must have watched this movie a hundred times. The story is wonderful, and in my opinion even though it is often times lumped in with family movies instead of musicals, it has to be one of the best musicals ever made. Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke were made for their roles. The little children were wonderful as well. The supporting cast is made up of the Walt Disney stable of actors that he used over and over again, but you really don't notice because they are all such good character actors they make their parts real to the viewer.
You will love the animated scenes and the fox hunt is just crazy!
This specific DVD version is the best because the behind the scenes stuff and documentries are great as they explain the animation, and how they painted the beautiful london cityscape on glass. The Disney fanatics should also buy this as they will get a special peek into the Disney movie machine that isn't usually shown on camera.
On my personal top list of all time I rate it #15 So get this movie and watch it again and again and again!
A jolly holiday.. Whenever I watch this movie, it takes me back to happy times. It really is a classic.
After you're done watching, the music and songs just keep playing in your head.
Julie Andrews is beautiful and funny. Dick van Dyke obviously has a fake accent, but is still charming and funny. The children are adorable.
It's a happy film that never gets old.One of the best classics of all time Rarely does a movie come along that has mass appeal. Even more rare is a movie that can stand the test of time. Still more rare is a movie that combines the two. This is just such a movie.
I can remember watching this once or twice as a child and finding it good. Now that I have 2 kids of my own I'm constantly on the look out for a movie that the whole family can watch without worrying about things like language, nudity, violence and other things that I don't think are appropriate for my 3 year old. Mary Poppins is a wonderful movie to put in on movie night as not only is it entertaining for the kids but it's also very entertaining for the parents which I have to admit is a rarity these days as you can only watch the same movie so many times before getting tired of it.
Great acting, great story, great imagination, great music, great movie, great buy.
