The skillful blending of drawn animation and computer-generated imagery excited anime fans when this science fiction mystery was released in 1995: many enthusiasts believeGhostsuggests what the future of anime will be, at least in the short term. The film is set in the not-too-distant future, when an unnamed government uses lifelike cyborgs or "enhanced" humans for undercover work. One of the key cyborgs is The Major, Motoko Kusanagi, who resembles a cross between The Terminator and a Playboy centerfold. She finds herself caught up in a tangled web of espionage and counterespionage as she searches for the mysterious superhacker known as "The Puppet Master."
Mamoru Oshii directs with a staccato rhythm, alternating sequences of rapid-fire action (car chases, gun battles, explosions) with static dialogue scenes that allow the characters to sort out the vaguely mystical and rather convoluted plot. Kusanagi's final quote from I Corinthians suggests that electronic evolution may compliment and eventually supplant organic evolution. The minor nudity, profanity, and considerable violence would earnGhost in the Shellat least a PG rating.--Charles Solomon
"2501" For when we meet again - Anime in the Age of Information On first viewing, I basically drowned in the richness that is the animated universe of "Ghost in the Shell" and any desire to be pulled from these depths simply went missing. Completely clueless as to how approximately six million dollars looks after it is has been spent with love and care, I was awestruck by this now seemingly "ancient" effort of 1995. The massive attention to detail is apparent throughout, from the lighting and shading, the colors, the "thermo optical" camouflage, to the fantastic action and story.
Since the first time I saw this in '02, I still find this film enjoyable on each viewing. It has held up quite well. The ancient Japanese language used in the singing, the percussive instrumentals combined with the slower "moving in time" scenery sequences are just amazing for animation. The conversations and relationship between Batou and the Major depict one of respect and unspoken love if ever there was one between two comrades in arms. A good story with questions put forth on what it means to be human are presented. A challenging and entertaining movie that will forever be responsible for my foray into the world of Anime from Japan. A great animated movie is "Ghost in the Shell".
