Kermit the Frog as Santa Claus narrates this delightful holiday tale. Rugby the Tiger is Jaime's favorite Christmas toy from last year. Rugby is convinced that he will be wrapped up and placed under the tree again this year. When it's Christmas Eve and all the other toys try to explain to him that that is not going to happen, Rugby decides to take matters into his own paws and place himself under the tree. He makes the dangerous trip from the playroom to the living room trying not to be seen, for if a toy's secret of being able to move when humans aren't around is discovered, it becomes frozen forever. Now all his friends from the toy room must get him back before it's too late. This sweet story about friendship and loyalty is delightful. The songs, including "Try the Impossible" and "Old Friends," are darling. This 50-minute video is great family viewing and an excellent addition to your Christmas collection. Jim Henson's Best Film This little known film was one of Henson's last efforts before he died in 1990. I consider it one of his very best works. We have a tradition in our house to watch this film every Christmas Eve. It still brings tears to my eyes. This film deserves to be distributed on DVD.
Why isn't this on DVD? After spending an afternoon watching the other Muppet Christmas specials on DVD, I found myself staring at my DVD shelf, seeing a gap where this classic special really should reside. As a child, I fell in love with this special immediately, and whenever they would air it, I'd still feel the same tugs on my heartstrings.
This is one of those Christmas specials that should NEVER be forgotten. Whoever owns the rights to this one now -- whether it's still the Jim Henson company or whether Disney got the rights when they bought the Muppets, take a look at the reviews we've got here. There's an audience! For Christmas of 2007, give us back "The Christmas Toy" on DVD!SUPER movie I remember watching this with my own children years ago and thought I had taped it. But, alas, it has disappeared into the place where lost or unlabeled tapes go. I wanted to show this to my kindergarten class, but can't find it. My children loved it then and who cares if the story line is similar to Disney's Toy Story. It is still a great movie.
