Dubious But a Lot of Fun Christianity is filled with writings that purport to be eyewitness accounts of Jesus' life. Many are forgeries, i.e., they are based on real traditions, but the writers put fake names on them to give them greater authority. The orthodox gospel of Matthew is one such example. Apocryphal writings of this kind have been surfacing for centuries with their "discoverers" often claiming to find them under extraordinary circumstances. The Archko Volume is one such work. The first edition revealed direct plagiarism from the novel Ben Hur, and this certainly cast doubt on everything else in the book. But there is still a mystery about it. Did the authors McIntosh and Twyman make up everything, or if they had created a collection of forgeries, were their writings still based on other documents? If so, what documents? Some Archko writings are intriguing; for example, people interested in UFOs will find remarkable passages here, and this in a book that was published in the late 1800's long before popular UFO awareness. The Archko Volume also contains my favorite apocryphal writing: "Gamaliel's interview with Joseph and Mary and others concerning Jesus" which presents us with an amusing account of Jesus as a lazy young man born of an ugly disagreeable father and a chubby mother who despaired that her son would amount to anything. Hardly the makings of a savior! Alas, New Testament scholars are right to reject the Archko documents since no trace of them have ever been found anywhere else, and the Ben Hur connection was an embarrassment, to say the least. Still, I give this book three stars for its fun value and for the little bit of mystery that it still provides. A Great Book For Research The first time I read this book was in 1974. At that time my husband and I were entering in ministry and were seeking different resources for our teachings and studies. The Archko Volume was given to me by a friend, because she knew I had had extensive studies in Bible Theology for 4 years and was very interested in the secular happenings during the events told both in the Old Testement and the New Testement. Because I was raised reading the original King James Version, the language in which the book was written was not hard for me to understand. It was exilerating...it was like reading a newspaper account of something currently happening. The people and events took on reality and life as I read page after page. For any serious student of scripture and theological doctrine, this book should be a staple in your bookcase. Hidden faith I stumbled upon this book and once I started reading it I knew it was by no accident. It is the first book I have read through in such short amount of time, as I couldn't put it down. I recommend that all people, especially those who have doubts or questions about Christianity or Jesus to read this. I thought I was reading something to educate myself of the Jewish Talmud, being I am curious to others faiths, which for one, I did, but the surprise was, evidence from other religions that knew Jesus more than my own religion did. It describes from the shepherds what Jesus looked like, it described his personal being and ways. I know so many Catholic people out there who are not sure if Jesus ever existed, who still don't know why we are Catholics when Jesus was a Jew, etc. This book clears up so much. What the real question is now that I have read it and feel even closer to Jesus is: If these records are held in the Vatican in Rome, why have not our own priests either known about it or told us about it? So many people leave the church because they need to hear these kind of things that exist. So many people loose faith and hope when they are presented with sickness, this can restore their faith and help them. A little bit of evidence goes a long way. I bought 3 other copies of this book, one for my parents, one for a Spiritual Director of our church and one for the Monsignor of our Church. I am not letting go of mine, as I have details highlighted and many words I looked up that I wasn't familiar with. If you are searching for answers, or wanting to know Jesus more and understand what happend between the Romans/Christians/Jews you will love this book! You even hear from Pontius Pilate and Herod....believe that! You will love it!
