This book deserves a wider reading... This is one of those books that you find after many years, and wonder how you ever missed it. Clifford Williams has offered a simple yet profound picture of the internal battle Christians face. The reality is that all of us feel a tug both toward the Promised Land, and back toward Egypt. We're struggle with mixed desires. Part of us doubts, while the other part praises. As a seminary prof, this is a helpful book for pastoral students and laypeople. It invites us to speak to the inner conflict instead of hiding it. It acknowledges, however, that most of us would rather present a pretty external picture rather than the more difficult secrets inside. This is an invitation to more integrity by a Christian philosopher who does not seem to live cloistered away from people, but evidences a real connection to the struggles of the Christian life. I love it.
