Goodnight Nobodyis bestselling author Jennifer Weiner's attempt at writing a mystery, with a healthy dose of the author's chick lit sensibilities thrown in for good measure. While thisDesperate HousewivesmeetsSex in the Citymurder mystery won't make readers shake in their Manolo Blahniks, it will provide the obligatory humor and compassion to which fans of Weiner'sGood in Bed,In Her Shoes, andLittle Earthquakeshave grown accustomed.
Kate Klein is a feisty, charmingly insecure Connecticut housewife who trades in a life of late-night karaoke sing-a-longs and West Village brunches with her best friend Janie for a world of mini-vans and Mommy and Me pilates classes. Life in Upchurch, Connecticut, heats up when Kate discovers picture-perfect wife and mother Kitty Cavanaugh dead on the pickled maple hardwood floor of her recently remodeled kitchen. A former chronicler of celebrity gossip, Kate takes it upon herself to solve the mystery of Kitty's murder and the disappearance of Lexi Hagen-Holdt, another Upchurch supermom. Along the way, the mysteries and disappointments in Kate's personal life begin to unravel, including her marriage to the kind-yet-uptight Ben, and her unresolved crush on Evan McKenna, a former neighbor with whom a one-night tryst ended in disaster. Thrown in for comic relief, and perhaps to show the depth of Weiner's talents as a writer, are Kate's twin boys and adorably sophisticated 5-year old daughter Sophie ("Sophie was sitting on the toilet, applying lipstick and waiting her turn...").
Goodnight Nobodyis chock full of plot twists and turns which can be overwhelming and superfluous. However, Weiner's charm and grace are usually enough to rescue readers from these moments of confusion, and reaffirm our commitment to this endearing contemporary voice.--Gisele Toueg
Great Read, You'll fall in love with the characters! This book is such a great read and highly entertaining. The characters are well developed and completely relatable. It's hard to believe this is her first mystery novel, she pulls it off seamlessly! She brings her readers into the life of Kate and her family and makes you care about the characters. I can't wait to read her other books.
Good Read After i read "In her shoes" I couldnt wait to get another Jennifer Weiner book to read. "Good Night Nobody" didn't disappoint, although it did take a little time to get my attention. After sometime I couldnt put the book down, and was sad when it was over. I recommend this book, and will definetly keep reading Weiner's books in the future!DON'T UNDERSTAND THE BAD REVIEWS I normally don't review books that have a hundred reviews already BUT...I just finished reading this book, rather quickly actually because I couldn't put it down, and went to her Amazon page. I disagree wholeheartedly with the reviewers who didn't like it. I mean, they're entitled to their opinion but I think sometimes people expect something else, maybe something a bit more frothy and are turned off when an author tries something a little different. It's not like Jennifer did a complete left turn and wrote a straigh mystery novel. All the color and character and emotion from her past books was intact as was the humorous dialog and perfectly correct descriptions of suburban life.
One reviewer asked "who is this book for?" I can answer that with a resounding "It's for me." I live in a suburb and my like Kate Klein find myself incredibly bored and that most of the time I don't measure up to the perfect park moms in my neighborhood. Life is messy and this book took realism and gave it an escapist mystery plot. What could be better?
