"It is not only what you eat that makes the difference, but also of extreme importance is when you eat it and in what combinations," say Harvey and Marilyn Diamond, authors of this classic bestseller. Their program results in eating balanced, nutritious, high-fiber foods, making dieting "unnecessary and as obsolete as sealing wax."
The Diamonds explain that body functions have a daily cycle: noon to 8 p.m.-- appropriation (eating and digestion); 8 p.m. to 4 a.m.--assimilation (absorption and use); 4 a.m. to noon--elimination (of body wastes and food debris).Fit for Lifeaims to return you to a lifestyle based on your natural body cycles. That means 70 percent of your diet should be "high-water-content foods"--fruits and vegetables--which facilitate all body functions. Consume nothing but fruit or fruit juice until noon, then eat salad and vegetables with every meal for the rest of the day.
Two-thirds of the book is explanation and discussion; one-third is menu plans and recipes. You won't be hungry, your food choices will be healthy, and you'll lose weight without dieting.--Joan Price
Best Plan I've Done I used to do this program and I am thinking about doing it again. I felt the best I've ever felt while doing it and I looked fantastic too. Photos of me from that time are glowing and healthy. I had lots of energy for work and exercising, my sex drive was the strongest it's ever been, and when I ran into old friends they said, "you are looking great...(pause)...really great." Everyone I ran into commented on how "good" I looked. I do believe a lot of people on here don't seem to understand the diet. You do NOT have to be vegan or eat only raw foods to follow this diet. They even tell you that in the book. It is actually explained much better in Fit For Life II: Living Health. The Diamonds believe it is ideal to eat more raw foods and less meat, but you can do whatever you want. They even give a case history of a man they counseled who eats steaks and salads, and does well on the diet. For the woman on here who has hypoglycemia, you don't need to eat tons of fruit all day long, you can have a fruit breakfast and then at noon, have a protein lunch, maybe a chicken breast and salad, or a tofu stir fry, whatever you're into. After graduating college, I let working all the time and stress get to me. I am now, on a regular American diet, 20 pounds overweight and tired much of the time. I'm going to try Fit For Life again! That being said, I do believe in biochemical individuality, so for some people, this program my not work. For me, it was a godsend.
A good introduction to raw food, but it's time to take the next step. Diamond credits the Life Science/Natural Hygiene movement for much of his ideas, and he presents a good compromise to keep from scaring people off, but the -real- program awaits just around the corner: fresh, whole, ripe, raw, organic fruits and vegetables,(mostly fruits). The complexites of food combining can be passed over by simply eating only one food per meal. Forget about so-called science, which is in reality politics and commerce. Some Good - Some Bad I got this book at the recommendation of my chiropractor who has more of a weight problem than I do, but I was more interested in getting healthy - getting off my Prevacid, controlling hypoglycemia etc. Well, I've been on it 4 days. I am off my Prevacid for the first time in over 8 years. Yeah! HOWEVER, I cannot eat fruit until noon then stop. An hour after lunch, my blood sugar dropped so badly that today I ate a half a peach on the way out the door because I was feeling so poorly. By the time I got to town (to get more fruit) a half hour later, I was weaving all over the road, could not walk a straight line, forgot where I was, and didn't know how to shut off the engine of my car. If you have hypoglycemia, this will not cure you as the author claims. It will make you worse and dangerously so. I'm going on with the plan, but I have to make adjustments. Like, I have to eat fruit all day long, not just in the morning. I could not wait to buy fruit. I stopped and got a candy bar because I knew it would work. I was feeling so bad that for the moment, I said "Screw It!". I believe had I not eaten that candy bar, I would have passed out. I have had hypoglycemia for years but have never felt as close to passing out as I did today. Each of the 4 days, I have had blood sugar problems and have made adjustments each day to try to diminish my symptoms, and I haven't gotten it right yet. I think if you don't have hypoglycemia, this might be great, but I do. What I like about it is that I love everything I get to eat and I'm getting to eat some things that I always avoided before thinking I would get fat from them. If you live far from town and fresh fruit and vegetables aren't easy to come by, it's going to be really tough to stick with this. Fresh fruit and vegetables stay fresh for a very short period of time so if you can't easily get more, it's really hard. I grow some of my own but don't have the space for everything and it's only seasonal. It is pretty extreme in that you are discouraged from eating anything that isn't "organic" and organic is expensive, too expensive for the average person. It is expensive to eat healthy which is why America is fat. It's also inconvenient to eat healthy. You can always find a candy bar no matter where you are, but you can't always find a piece of fruit. If you have chronic constipation, this should cure you. I thought the theories sounded pretty believable and I don't know how much of the current "scientific studies" that are being carried on are believable either. Probably depends on who's footing the bill. The book says you can contact Marilyn at her web site. I tried and it is getting some kind of overhaul. It has a photo of her with a man who I assume is her significant other and she looks 5 years younger than she did when this book was first published 20 years ago! I'm just assuming that she is still on the plan. For that reason alone, I gotta give this plan a good try. She looks fabulous.
