Great fun read. A friend suggested that I read some of the prey series books. The first one I read, Sudden Prey, was ok but nothing special. However, after reading Secret Prey, I can understand why so many people enjoy the Prey books. Secret Prey was good reading from beginning to end. The villian was great and there was several scenes of humor that had me laughing out-loud. I look forward to another Lucas Davenport book. A pretty good ride!
I'm new to John Sanford, but I read two previous books before starting "Secret Prey." I thought it might be nice to know a little bit of the hero's history. The two books I read were pretty brutal and graphic, but I liked Lucas Davenport. I read "Secret Prey" in one day...and I enjoyed it. I thought the plot moved right along and I liked the little side trip the author took with the silver-haired opium club. I look forward to other Lucas Davenport stories...and I like him with the lady cop much better than I liked him with the lady surgeon. The lady cop understands the nature of his work and she doesn't take anything from him that she doesn't give right back, in spades. There's more fire and vinegar in this relationship and I thought it really rang true. "Secret Prey" is a great summer book..... 9th for Davenport - slow start, better ending If you sat at your Mac trying to write a novel, what names might you give your characters? If you sat there too long, you might name one "Del", and add "Capslock" as a surname. This is perhaps what Sandford has done, but if you can get away from the clunky names, chances are you'll find this an enjoyable book. At times a slow read, it picks up the pace in the second half - although it's not too difficult to guess "whodunit", the question remains how many more characters will be killed off, and why? Sandford leads the reader down a bit of a blind alley in the first few chapters, but any more than that would give the story away...
