Essentially, essential character and background development I happened to browse the fantasy section toward the end of summer and thought a David Eddings tale may be a good way to usher in the change of season and coming holidays. I was not mistaken. Well, considering it starts out in Aunt Pol's kitchen and the story progresses through the eyes of a young Garion, it's fitting. 'Pawn of Prophecy', on it's own, may not be much, but it is a nice set up. Even though I have not yet read further in The Belgariad, I can say it had to start right here. A coming of age tale of an unsuspecting farm boy who loves legends and stories, it's not an overly exciting book, but a quick, comfortable, and relaxing read. David Eddings has a real grasp on maintaining a very diverse set of background and personality in his characters. From the inexperience and youth of Garion, to the power and impatience of Aunt Pol, the power and nonchalance of Mr. Wolf, the strong simple Durnik, and of course, the constant comedic conniving of Silk, each character is consistent. Slow at times but this book is everything I expected and wanted it to be! Excellent Book ... I'm trying to think back to when I received my first copy of the Pawn of Prophecy. It was shortly after I finished high school I think. I do know that I waited, not so patiently, for every book after that to go to paperback so I could buy it. David Eddings was/is my favorite author. I am now in my mid-30's and I will still pick these books up about once a year and reread them. The Pawn of Prophecy sets the ground work for a most amazing fantasy adventure. Wizards, Dragons, Knights in shining armor, the series has it all. This first book does an excellent job of setting the stage and introducing us to most of the characters. Characters I feel like I know. Characters I love to revisit. I've tried to read other science fiction/fantasy books but I have a hard time getting into them. I have a hard time relating to their characters. The Pawn of Prophecy and it's mismatched bunch grabbed me right away and held onto me through two 5 book series and two supplemental books. I feel it's a must read for anyone who like to read. Great Series with a great start A Must Read for any fantasy or non-fantasy fan. The book moves along fantastically. It is not overly detailed, and therefor moves along at a great pace. The story centers around Garion and his mysterious Aunt Pol. The story starts on the farm that Garion grew up in, raised by his Aunt Pol. A few events quickly take place and we are gathered into the story as it moves from place to place in an exciting, but unpredictable journey. A wide range of characters makes this story great. Check it out, you wont regret it.
