Crusie + Mayer = Brilliant! This is one of the best books I've read in years. Both authors blend beautifully and seam-free throughout. Agnes and the Hitman is hilarious, action-packed, and has a love story.
It's true that when you start reading this book you feel as though you've entered blind and you have no clue what's going on, but stick with it! I actually don't want to give a summary because I think it would be best to read this book without having any clue what happens. The 2 main characters are Agnes and Shane. Agnes adds a ton of humor throughout, and even though Shane is a man of few words I think all female readers will fall for him. I did.
The love story between Agnes and Shane is sweet. It's not exactly the most romantic story I've ever heard, but it fits this book perfectly and opens it to a lot of male readers.
The plot and all the action is smart, witty, and fun. I had the hardest time putting this book down. And even though I felt a little lost in the beginning, it works perfectly later in the book as things unravel. And it was fun to guess what would happen. But because Crusie and Mayer are so brilliant, I doubt anyone could ever guess every surprise that comes out. I think my jaw dropped and stayed in "shock" mode for the whole last chapter or two. This mystery is levels above the other ones on the shelf at the book store, that's for sure.
This is a must read, and you'll want to pass it on to your friends. Great book! great read I have read and re-read this book about 10 times. Every time I laugh out loud. It is one of the most enjoyable books I have read for a while. Not fine literature, just fun Chick-Lit for the Non-Chick-Lit Fan I don't read a lot of chick-lit, but this is chick-lit with crime and adventure thrown in!
It was the title that caught my attention, so I bought it on a whim. I needed a bit of light reading and this fit the bill. I found there to be an excellent balance of Jennifer Crusie's (contemporary-chick-lit-romance) and Bob Mayer's (military/science fiction thrillers) writing styles, neither of whom are authors I would read separately, but together I find them delightful.
It is interesting to hear the narrative from both Agnes's (Crusie) and Shane's (Mayer) point of view, sometimes overlapping chronologically and sometimes moving us ahead, but never in a confusing manner, as so often can occur with overlapping chronology. The writing styles are smooth and blended into each other such as to be indistinguishable to me, though perhaps if I was more familiar with their separate bibliographies, I would not find that to be true. There are some excellent plot twists as well as some downright laugh-out-loud moments. Though slightly far fetched in storyline, this is easy to overlook when given so much to sink one's teeth into.
Loved it! It's a mystery until the last few chapters and keeps you guessing on what in the world is going on along with the occasional oops here and there! I was laughing and truly enjoyed it all. Makes you want to get your own personal hitman to cook for. When They Piss You Off...Pull Out the Frying Pan! This was typical chick-lit with a cooky sense of humor. Overall I really liked the novel because Agnes is not your typical chick lit heroine in that she doesn't do that bit of wallowing in self pity at the beginning. She takes care of most of her problems herself...which usually means she wallops the person in question with a frying pan (her weapon of choice). The relationships between the mob people are a little hard to follow, can't really pinpoint why but don't read this too quickly or you'll end up confused. I also like the fact that the sex scenes between her and the hit man are sexy AND realistic (not perfect). I think fans of Janet Evanovich would enjoy this.
