Is a loved one missing some body parts? Are blondes becoming extinct? Is everyone at your dinner table of the same species? Humans and chimpanzees differ in only 400 genes; is that why a chimp fetus resembles a human being? And should that worry us? There's a new genetic cure for drug addiction--is it worse than the disease?
What's comingNext? Get a hint of what Michael Crichton sees on the horizon in this short video clip: high bandwidth or low bandwidth
We live in a time of momentous scientific leaps, a time when it's possible to sell our eggs and sperm online for thousands of dollars and to test our spouses for genetic maladies.
We live in a time when one fifth of all our genes are owned by someone else, and an unsuspecting person and his family can be pursued cross-country because they happen to have certain valuable genes within their chromosomes...
Devilishly clever,Nextblends fact and fiction into a breathless tale of a new world where nothing is what it seems and a set of new possibilities can open at every turn.
Nextchallenges our sense of reality and notions of morality. Balancing the comic and the bizarre with the genuinely frightening and disturbing,Nextshatters our assumptions and reveals shocking new choices where we least expect.
Way below standards!!!!!!! I have read many of his books, Timeline, Prey, The Jurassics, Air Frame, etc. I was excited to start this, good subject matter, and Crichton could do it. It started great and was a fast read, but soon turned into garbage. I felt he was trying to develop his characters into a clever and funny situations, but it does NOT WORK! These characters are extremely boring to say the least and not funny. Now for my next gripe, the talking animals - the parrot, chimp, orang, etc. I bought way more into Dr. Dolittle than I did the smart butted parrot or especially the half chimp half human boy that had "issues" at school. I almost didn't get past the incident at school where bullies tried to beat up "Monkey boy" but the chimp got the best of them by pulling off his pants and throwing crap at the boys. Stay away from this one, it will piss you off if you are a Michael Crichton fan. I only gave it two stars because it started good and was a rather fast read.
Next: Write a book about a subject, not the paranoia on the subject. Story: Next is set in the fast paced world of genetic engineering. Where tomorrow someone may own the gene that gives people blue eyes and our pets may be living bill boards. The story is broken up into three parts (the story bounces between them)that illustrate how, in the extreme if bio genectics is allowed to run amok, it could change our world for the worse. The first is the case of Mr. Frank Burnett, he has the unfortunate case of having cells that combat cancer. His doctor discovered this, but didn't tell burnett. The doctor proceeded to make a lot of money with his discovery. When Burnett sues to get his part of the money, he loses to a technicality. Now Burnett and his family are living cell factories whether they want to be or not.. The second is Mr.Kendall, he was working as research scientist when he decided to see what would happen if he combined his dna with the dna of a chimp. The creature was never souppsed to be born but it was, now Mr. Kendall is torn between letting the creature live and removing something that shouldn't exist. The third case is of Josh, another researcher working on a maturity gene, he accidentaly doses his brother, his brother is a drug addict who thought he could get high off somthing he finds in Josh's car, and his brother becomes a responsible productive adult almost overnight. Unfortunatley as time goes on it is found the drug has certain side effects.. ---- This book is about what happens when no one is paying attention and by the time they do start paying attention what can go wrong. There are some interesting facts in this book about bio technology and what can be done with it. There is also the cautionary tale about what could happen if the patent system and some of the laws are left as they are. This isnt a bad book and for the most part satisfies the long afternoon read, it keeps the pages turning. But it does focus mainly on paranoia, so some of the story is a stretch. But other than that it is a good, fast paced read.Scary Even if most of the events are fictional, the possibilities opened are scary. Is interesting the way the author describes different situations, without any link between them to build up an argument about power, individuality and irresponsible acts against society. But I think there is a lack of "endings". The last part is great, because the author gives his political, ethical and scientific point of view. Is urgent to open a dialogue about all the issues that are involve in the genetic research.
